hey Ian,
thanks for the comments, i'm glad to hear you think it looks good, i do work at mercury, right now i'm doing Digital painting on class of the titans, by next year though i'll be animating.
its good to hear that your doing acting piece, it doesn't have to be long, not much more then 30secs, try to have two characters interact with each other, just focus on acting out their character and make the animation look good, right now though as far as i heard the industry is a bit slow, studio B is just starting a new flash show, just try every studio in town and see what happens, don't worry if nothing does, it took me over a few months to just get in for painting.
as for what to put in your portfolio, the life drawing you have so far is good, few bgs is good too, try and add more things that relate to animation if that is what you want to do, maybe scan some keys and shrink them along a page or so? study other people's portfolios and learn from that.
